Famous bridges… Marble and Movies

On Saturday October 7, we will pass on a road that will take us to the marble quarries passing over the Vara Bridges (Ponti di Vara)

They have been built in 1890 to complete the former “marble railway” network to transport the marble extracted from the basins to the port of Marina di Carrara. An Italian agent of the Lumière brothers in 1897 also filmed the bridges of Vara and the quarry. Then many years later, in 2008, the location was so suggestive that it was used to shoot the beginning of the film “Quantum of Solace” starring Daniel Craig as 007 agent James Bond.

The railroad operated from 1876 to 1964, with over 500,000 tons of marble transported annually. Today the bridges are paved and used to get by car and motorcycle to the marble quarries.
